I was a little sad to leave our posh hotel at Beaver Creek. I could so get used to a place like that. However, I was excited to be seeing Martin again. I gave John a Freshies mug for his birthday that I was able to sneak into the car somehow. I had given him his big gift at the start of the trip - a watch that wouldn’t fall off.
Our drive to Denver was slowed down a little bit by the 3 bus loads of teenagers that were in the McDonald’s where we stopped. They were going to camp from Minnesota to Moab. They were pretty excited. John’s driving skills made up a lot of the time though, and we reached Martin’s house at 10, as promised.
With all the tuhbs in the car, we had to do some maneuvering. I offloaded a big tuhb and some other items to try to make room for Martin and his gear. John re-tetris'd the trunk and amazingly it all fit, even Martin. Awesome!
Grocery shopping was next so that we could get some carbs for Martin. It was fun watching the two men discuss salt versus no salt, whole wheat versus rye, trans fat, etc. My job was to keep reminding them they wanted greek yogurt.
We headed out and enjoyed some beautiful views on the way. Estes Park has a lot of traffic. A lot. We found our campsite, set up the tents, and then went to the Visitor center. After watching the movie, we talked to the Ranger about the Long’s Peak hike. The boys decided to go tomorrow and are so pumped about it! I will not be going on this hike. It is not a hike. It clearly says that in the description and trail guide. It is a climb and scramble. I can hike. I cannot climb and scramble. I might fall off the mountain. I know my limitations.
I talked to the Ranger about some hikes I could do and how to get to them on the shuttle, so I will be exploring Estes Park or doing an easier hike on my own tomorrow.
Next we went to the Go Kart track. We rode go karts, bumper cars, played miniature golf, and jumped on the Xtreme Trampoline. It was fabulous! Two kiddieland birthdays in one year! (My birthday was at a miniature golf course too.) John won golf. Martin did triple flips on the trampoline. I had a blast on the trampoline too. They hook you up to these huge rubberbands that help you spring even higher. Before we started our trip, I would not have been allowed on them. I have lost over 10 pounds on this trip so far.
John’s sister Cathy called to wish him a happy birthday, and his parents left a message where they sang to him. Two part harmony! It was beautiful! Fajitas for dinner, and the men started getting their gear ready for tomorrow’s hike. They are leaving at 2 a.m. I am sleeping in as late as I want.
